Rafting the Taos Box

Rafting the Taos Box

The lower Taos Box contains the best whitewater in New Mexico and is perhaps the premier one-day wilderness trip in the U.S. The Box is a 17-mile long trip and requires everybody to participate by paddling. Participants should be in good physical condition and ready for the rigors of paddeling and the posibility of a unintentional whitewater swim in cold water.

After a shuttle from the Rio Grande Visitor's Center, the excitement begins just northwest of Taos, New Mexico. Next, Kokopelli Rafting guides will talk you through a thorough safety briefing before we float through relatively calm water for a few miles. We'll practice our teamwork and paddling for the demanding whitewater including Ski Jump, Dead Car, Powerline Falls, and the Class IV Rock Garden downstream.

The Rio Grande Gorge is filled with wildlife, geology, and history. As of late, reintroduced bighorn sheep populations have been spoted on almost all trips. You'll have the opportunity to view the Mamby Hot Springs, as well as the plant life and geology of the gorge. As the gorge deepens and the whitewater increases, we'll still take time to look around and enjoy the beauty of northern New Mexico.

We stop for a delicious buffet-style lunch somewhere near the middle of the trip. The lunch break allows us the opportunity to suit up for more challenging rapids ahead. The last two miles of the Taos Box are known as the "Rio Bravo," or wild river, section. In this section, the river descends 70 feet per mile. After running one class III or IV rapid after another, we catch our breaths and drop into the Class IV grand finale, Sunset Rapid.

Sunset Rapid

Rafting the Taos Box is demanding but unsurpassed in its combination of excitement, wilderness, and beauty. Kokopelli Rafting will provide a fresh, all-you-can-eat buffet lunch, as well as polar fleece tops and full splash suits to keep you comfortable. We provide wetsuits on request during early season trips.

Minimum age on the Taos Box is 12 and participants should properly fit into an adult sized personal floatation device. However, at some water levels we may raise the age requirement and advise that guests have the physical stamina to fully participate.

Price: $110* per person weekdays. $120* per person weekends.
This trip is for adventerous individuals in good physical fitness, and features sections of continuous whitewater, especially during higher flows.
